In the Bleak Mid-Winter (Cello Only)

This particular arrangement of the increasingly well-known Christmas carol, In the Bleak Midwinter, was written to be accompanied by the piano or the harp, along with a cello. The first two verses go substantially slower than you may have ever heard this tune. I believe in the beauty of stillness, especially when well-executed and purposeful. In this case it is the stillness of freshly fallen snow, with the motion of the accompaniment a finely wrought framework upon which the melody peacefully lays. The third verse picks up the tempo a bit as the undercurrent of the piano or harp slows to match the smooth chorale of the vocals. Then in the fourth verse we get to feel a little bit of wind in our hair as the verse gathers speed, slowing into the final verse which rises in its simple, plaintive question: What can I give him, poor as I am? The alto part does divide during one verse.
